The Protectorate of Uganda was a protectorate of the British Empire from 1894 to 1962.
In 1895, the Ugandan defense forces called the Uganda Rifles was created.
On 1 January 1902, the somewhat irregular armed force of Uganda was reformed and re-titled the 4th Battalion of the King's African Rifles (KAR). The 4th Battalion of the King's African Rifles enjoyed success against the German forces in East Africa, during the first and second world wars.
The 4th Battalion of the King's African Rifles also developed an emergency response for the intelligence collection on German activities and performed political-military liaison with allies in East Africa. According to the UK National Archive records, the Uganda Intelligence Department of the 4th Battalion of the King's African Rifles, was about 20 strong and included European officers and African soldiers.

Looking at the current Uganda, one may forget its turbulent history. Once you remember the history you can see all the seeds of instability sprouting in all the institutional problems of Uganda.

I always wondered why we were under protection. From what, from whom? and then If we were a protectorate, why and how could we get independence?
